In the years after World War II, before the foundation of the two German states in 1949, Germany was divided into four occupation zones. Political and cultural issues in Germany were controlled by the occupying powers, i.e. the United States, the Soviet Union, Great Britain and France. The lecture will attempt to trace the main features of the developments in art and art policy in those years, which were characterised by great diversity. Later the Cold War limited this diversity.
