Students at KIT are covered by statutory accident insurance through the Unfallkasse Baden-Württemberg (UKBW).
In the event of an accident, the Unfallkasse Baden-Württemberg (UKBW) covers the costs of medical treatment and rehabilitation. This insurance is free of charge for students. The fees are paid by the state of Baden-Württemberg.
Accidents that occur in connection with attending the university (this also includes journeys to and from the university) and that have resulted in medical treatment must be reported immediately to the UKBW by the university.
In order to ensure timely notification to the Unfallkasse, we rely on the cooperation of our students.
We therefore ask you to report the accident either to your institute/faculty or to studierendenservice∂sle.kit.edu using the official UKBW form (currently only available in German).
Background: Statutory accident insurance
Students are insured against accidents at work (SGB VII) during training and further education at universities in the same way as employees. However, statutory accident insurance only covers accidents that occur on the university campus or on the direct route to or from the university. Students are also covered by statutory accident insurance for general university sports events. Only personal injury is insured.
Internships abroad are only covered by this insurance if the internship is an organized and endorsed activity by the German university. This requires that the university's organizational area of responsibility also includes the performance of activities abroad that serve the purpose of the studies and that the university organizes, monitors and carries out the stay abroad.
If, on the other hand, the student is free to decide whether, when and which facilities abroad are visited for the completion of work as part of their studies, this is not based on "managerial authority" on the part of the university. Therefore, there is no accident insurance cover through the statutory accident insurance.
In the case of internships, the university has no direct influence on the way in which the internship is carried out or on the course of the internship. The students are integrated into the internship company's operations. They are covered by statutory accident insurance via the accident insurance provider responsible for the company where the internshop is taking place.
FAQ
Detailed explanations can be found on page 2 of the form.
Only personal injury.
The statutory accident insurance (UKBW for short) only covers the statutory health insurance portion. This means that it covers costs that your statutory health insurance would also pay for. Private treatments are not covered!
If you have private health insurance, please inform the staff at the registration desk or the doctor treating you before treatment.
The hospital staff or doctor must then issue two invoices: One to the statutory accident insurance (UKBW for short) for the statutory health insurance portion and one to your private insurance company, which must pay the difference (total treatment costs minus the statutory health insurance portion).
Excursions are also insured against accidents, provided they are related to your studies and supervised by a professor.
Accidents in the context of university sports are also insured. Further information.
